Will Bing Become A Verb?
In the past few months there has been an flood of blog posts about Bing, or how Bing is going to dethrone Google or on the other hand why no one will ever knock Google out of the top. Well it might be that I quit noticing or it could be that bloggers and other media outlets have moved on to new stories. So I think this is the perfect time to weigh in and give my 2 cents now that I have your attention.
What About the People?
I liked MSN and I use Google I even use Yahoo! Sometimes, I bet you do to, am I right? Thought so, but we are talking about Bing giving Google a beat down. I think the biggest problem that Bing is going to face is not that there search results are less relevant then Google’s, it’s the users. Yes I said it; their hurdle will be the users. What I am talking about are people who work online in the marketing industry or web development industry know how to search, we usually know what we are looking for and depending I personally will use any of the search engines. This leaves a huge percentage of people out there that when they search they feel whatever Google lists on the first page then that MUST be the best and has to be what their looking for. Google has become a verb, Googling has become the equivalent to searching online, just like when you go to the store and your husband or wife asks you to buy some Kleenex not necessarily the “brand” but tissues.
It Takes time to be a Playa
While companies dominate with these connections there is still plenty of room for competition. OK what I am babbling about is that regardless if Bing’s search results are better than Google’s the mass of users searching has no Idea that it is better or not. Google has become a part of a generation a household name and we all know this. It’s not about search engine or a decision engine. It’s going to take a whole new generation of internet users to break this cycle. Google will dominate for the foreseeable future but Bing has an opportunity to be a successful player if they go about it the right way.
